Sitting In The Middle of a Drum Circle

This proves that you CAN go home again!

East Lansing, Michigan on a crisp fall day found us on the campus of Michigan State University to participate in the 40th Alumni Band Day.

Three of our new Board of Directors are MSU Alumni Band Trumpet Players. Brad Poreda is Vice President, Howard Stukey is Chairman, and Doug Brown is the Host and Executive Director.
Feeling just a little shy, I found myself surrounded by awesome percussionists. I whipped out my iPhone and started recording video while holding a microphone. To say the the earth moved beneath me is an under-statement. When you play the video above, there are stills for the first 35 seconds, then the drum line video begins.

Playing for 70,000+

With just one hour of practice on the field it all came back to us, 8 to 5. Feeling the energy from the stands was just too good to put into words. From where we were, looking up at the stands, it sure felt like being home again.

Thanks to Lesa Nelson for the wonderful still photography and especially to John Madden, Director of the Spartan Marching Band, our host!

Dazzling Solos
Picture
Traveling with the Natural State Brass Band from Little Rock on their tour of England, we had a chance to hear some great bands and some dazzling solos. Here is a clipping from the joint concert with the Freckleton Brass Band. Paul Dalton is conducting and the Euphonium soloist is Patrick Howard.

The Right Place At The Right Time

There was so much energy at the Michigan State vs. Iowa football game that I’ll be living on that adrenaline for weeks to come, but this little clip was a video accident turned into a windfall.

This iPhone video clip includes a portion of the famous “street series” cadence from the Michigan State Spartan Band with a roll off and the beginning of the Michigan State Fight Song.

Being in the right place to catch this clip was “priceless” and if you’ll pay close attention, you’ll note the sections pass in front of the camera at a wonderful “series” of motion.

Special thanks to the Director of the Michigan State Spartan Band, John Madden for the hospitality, and to the band that “knew me when.”

Playing In The Band Is Like Flying a Fighter Plane

Dr. Lowell Graham, Chairman of the Music Department at the University of Texas at El Paso once told me that playing in the band was like flying a fighter plane! Here is a 15 minute interview where he explains that remark and helps us explain why many, if not most corporate CEOs and CFOs are active musicians.
